Over the past five years, several crypto influencers and executives have been targeted in kidnappings. Not all of them survived.
Where there is money, there will be reckless people. And where there is a lot of money, there will be dangerous people.
Crypto currencies are moving billions of dollars these days. Thanks to the security technology, which is actually very safe, there is basically no way of hacking eWallets.
That means, if you have evil designs and want to rob someone off their money, the only way to get access to it is that they tell you.
And if you have built up an internet persona as an expert for crypto currencies, you might be able to earn a lot of money, but you are also making yourself a target.
Over the last few years, a new criminal niche has developed, and it concerns kidnappings of crypto influencers.
Here is a list of crypto influencers that were kidnapped, plus what happened to them.
These cases highlight the growing risks for prominent figures in the crypto industry. Criminals now view cryptocurrency assets as high-stakes targets.
The recent kidnappings of crypto influencers like Kevin Mirshahi and Dean Skurka underscore the increasing trend of targeting high-profile figures in the cryptocurrency space.
Dean Skurka, CEO of WonderFi, was kidnapped in Toronto earlier this month. He was forced to pay a $1 million ransom to secure his release. This incident is part of a concerning pattern, as the allure of cryptocurrency assets makes influencers and executives prime targets for criminals.
In Canada, another prominent figure, Aiden Pleterski, known as the “Crypto King,” was also kidnapped. He was also assaulted in 2023 over alleged mishandling of funds, with his kidnappers demanding a ransom of $3 million.
Other instances internationally include a 2024 case in Kyiv. A foreign Bitcoiner was murdered for his holdings, and a separate kidnapping in Malaysia, where ransom in Tether (USDT) was demanded for a Chinese national.
These incidents highlight the increasing risks associated with public visibility in the crypto sector. They are emphasizing the need for heightened security among crypto professionals as physical threats escalate alongside traditional cybersecurity concerns.
In July 2023, Fernando Pérez Algaba was found dismembered in a suitcase in Buenos Aires. The Argentine cryptocurrency influencer had been reported missing. He was known for his flashy lifestyle and involvement in crypto and luxury car trading. Algaba had accumulated debts, which allegedly linked him to dangerous individuals.
His body parts were found by local children, sparking a murder investigation. Authorities suspect financial conflicts and unpaid debts may have played a role in his tragic death, underscoring risks associated with high-profile financial dealings.
